The Sand | |

The beaches around Apalachicola are among the finest in the world. Crystal
quartz sand has washed down the rivers from the Apalachian mountains for
centuries, depositing their white crystals on the beaches of the blue Gulf
of Mexico waters. Seen from a distance, the dunes often look like snow
drifts.
Held in place by delicate coastal plants like the sea oats, the dunes build during good weather, and are washed away during the hurricanes, only to repeat the cycles. The glare from the water and sand can combine and create conditions for very nasty sunburns. Use your sun block religiously. |

Enjoy yourself, take a picnic lunch. There are public beaches on St George Island and near Indian pass and on Cape San Blas, all within a short driving distance from Apalachicola. Watch the manta rays breach, the porpoises come so close you feel as if you could swim to them, the ghost crabs dare to come out to check you out when you remain still. Take the time to walk a few minutes to find yourself alone with some of the most pristine natural surroundings found anywhere.
