Forgotten Coast Beaches

The Sand

The beaches around Apalachicola are among the finest in the world. Crystal quartz sand has washed down the rivers from the Apalachian mountains for centuries, depositing their white crystals on the beaches of the blue Gulf of Mexico waters. Seen from a distance, the dunes often look like snow drifts.

Held in place by delicate coastal plants like the sea oats, the dunes build during good weather, and are washed away during the hurricanes, only to repeat the cycles.

Be careful! The glare from the water and sand can combine and create conditions for very nasty sunburns. Use your sun block religiously.

Enjoy the beach!

Enjoy yourself, take a picnic lunch. There are public beaches on St George Island and near Indian pass and on Cape San Blas, all within a short driving distance from Apalachicola. Watch the manta rays breach, the porpoises come so close you feel as if you could swim to them, the ghost crabs dare to come out to check you out when you remain still. Take the time to walk a few minutes to find yourself alone with some of the most pristine natural surroundings found anywhere.

The Lighthouse

For a really interesting day out on some fantastic beach, you'll need to find a boat to take you to Little St George Island, the western part of the island now isolated by the Bob Sykes cut.  In addition to pristine beaches, secluded coves, walking trails, and undisturbed wildlife, you can see the Cape St George Lighthouse.  In danger of collapse from erosion, a local group named the Cape St. George Lighthouse Society raised funds and awareness to save the lighthouse. The Florida Lighthouse Association also contributed funds and the project received a $40,000 state matching grant. A massive engineering effort brought it back to vertical, and reinforced the foundation. The 2004 storm season caused even more beach erosion, and the foundation now stands in the surf. The future of this historic landmard remains in serious peril!
